摘 要
宋临川王刘义庆撰《世说新语》,文字 秀,描绘人物入神,向为学子所重。刘孝标注,引撷广博,尤与裴注《三国志》,六臣注《文选》齐名。自1976年美国学者马君瑞志英译《世说》 【164】 出版,海外士林,鉴赏是书者益众。马君穷廿年之精力,除《世说》正文外,兼译刘注,译竟,特制附录四种:曰传略(112页),曰释名(51页),曰缩写(12页),曰书目(12页),便利读者,尤见苦心。其中传略最有用,诚以《世说》惯例,举人名,恒用字号或官衔,如袁奉高、郄嘉宾、王大将军、刘尹之类,非熟谙魏晋掌故者,不能遽辨甲乙也。
马译通体顺适,然以牵涉太广,不能无瑕疵。六朝文义,有非今日所易了悟者,马君未能详考,遂致错解。本文作者,就阅读所得,随时过录,得四百余条。于魏晋间语,以及名物训诂,探奥诠微,尤三致意。其他马译未尽善者,亦逐条推敲,顺次迻译,与马文齐列并观。有志六朝文史、或从事翻译者,谅有所取资焉。
序
宋临川王刘义庆(403—444)撰《世说新语》,自汉徂晋,轶事旧闻,嘉言妙语,网罗甚尽。厘为三十门,而以“德行”、“言语”、“政事”、“文学”冠,则《论语》“先进”之遗教也。其书所涉甚广,所载人物、名宦贤媛,逆臣孝子,辄多毁誉。序事简净,词竟而意未尽,品尝有余味。自来治文史者,靡不推奉。遂令临川享名千载,历久弥新。两晋六朝文士,叙事修词尚简。后人病其太甚,则博采他书,补所未足。故陈寿(233—297)《三国志》而有裴注,昭明(501—531)而有六臣。刘峻(孝标,462—521)于《世说》亦然。凡引经史杂著四百余种,诗赋杂文七十余种,间亦参益己意,笺释求真。所引书,后多亡佚,故有清辑佚诸家。罔不视同瓖宝。
《世说》诸本,所知者四:一为日本尊经阁影印宋高宗绍兴八年(1138)董弅本。二为宋孝宗淳熙十五年(1188)陆游(1125—1209)本。明世宗嘉靖(1522—1567)间吴郡袁褧嘉趣堂据以重雕。清宣宗道光(1821—1850)中浦江周心如纷欣阁重刊,而德宗光绪(1875—1908)间长沙王先谦(1842—1918)又据纷欣阁版重刻。今《四部丛刊》及《四部备要》刊本,即据袁氏之旧也。三为清徐乾学(1631—1694)传是楼所藏宋孝宗淳熙十六年(1189)湘刻本。四为日本旧藏唐写《世说新书》残卷,上虞罗振玉(1866—1940)影印本。唐时《世说》固称《新书》,非《新语》也。诸本文字颇多异同,唯世推尊经阁本为最善。
有清治《世说》者,初有沈严之《校语》(上海涵芬楼,1929),继有李慈铭(1830—1894)之《批校》,程炎震之《笺证》,李详之《笺释》。稍近则有刘盼遂之《校笺》,贺昌群之《札记》,杨勇之《校笺》(香港,1969),余嘉锡(1883—1955)之《笺疏》(北京,1983),徐震堮之《校笺》(北京,1984),及一良之《札记》(收入《魏晋南北朝史论集》,页397—401,北京,1963)。余著诠解史实为多,徐震堮则侧重训诂注释。
本书译者马瑞志先生,籍美国而生于吾国河北保定,就学于北京近郊通县。幼擅华语,而好吾国史。普林斯顿大学(Princeton University)既卒业,入加州大学(University of California at Berkeley)研究院。时Peter Alexis Boodberg(1903—1972)主东亚语文系,延吾国硕儒赵元任(1892—1982)先生主讲音韵学,马氏为入室弟子。Boodberg特嗜北朝史,尝主编《中古史译丛》(Chinese Dynastic Histories Translations)。从游者承其衣钵,多迻译南北朝史籍,如丁爱博(Albert E. Dien)译《宇文护传》(Berkeley, 1967),Michael C. Rogers译《苻坚传》(Berkeley, 1968),马氏译《吕光传》(Berkeley, 1959)。马书先就,其前驱也。学成离校,任教明州大学(University of Minnesota),从事《世说》,历廿载而成书。
马氏功力甚勤。其译《世说》也,广集佳本,勘校异文。除推敲临川正文外,孝标注,亦兼收并蓄不稍弃。犹不足,则采日人及西方学者之论著,参读唐宋诸大类书。于史事之递传,训诂之得失,慎思明辨,必求心安而后已。译文竟,附〈传略〉(499—611页),〈释名〉(613—644页),〈缩写〉(665—677页)〈书目〉(679—726页),共二百二十七页。西人治汉学,精微若君者,不多见。而君虚怀若谷,不耻下问,其雅量尤不易企及。当今美籍学者,咸推君为吾国中古史祭酒。实至名归,非溢美也。
虽然,肇基之士,往往草创,顾此失彼,势有宜然。《世说》所载,始于汉武而止乎晋末。上下五百年,所涉人物,几达六百。其间国体之分合,人事之变幻,制度之兴革,无论矣。魏晋人语,当时特等常耳,有非今人所易解者。苟望文而生义,必郢书而燕说。阿堵物,宁馨儿,将毋同,固人所尽知矣。如民、民家、我家、自称、犹下官也(Ⅴ/20, ⅩⅧ/12, Ⅷ/132);大家,家主(Ⅴ/18)。君家,君也,犹言尔也(Ⅸ/6)。陵迟,坎坷也(Ⅱ/5)。善于托大,高自位置也(Ⅷ/44)。方幅齿遇,相待如常礼也(ⅪⅩ/18)。优润,假借也,宽贷也(ⅩⅢ/17)。风尘,谣诼也,仕宦也(Ⅴ/13注引《中兴书》ⅩⅤ/2注引虞预《晋书》)。修为家之治Ⅸ/47),造作(同上),善居舍(ⅩⅩⅢ/10),皆言治产也。小极,困疲也(Ⅱ/33)。小却(Ⅸ/79),小悉(Ⅷ/132),须臾也。消息,调治也(Ⅹ/23)。人情,犹今言民意也(Ⅶ/28, ⅩⅩⅩⅢ/17)。前,谒见也(Ⅶ/30, ⅩⅩⅢ/44, ⅩⅩⅩⅥ/5)。举,待也,视也,接也(ⅩⅢ/10)。觉,差也,距也(ⅩⅩⅥ/13)。此第举一二言之,足征译述之匪易。盖译事欲其精,非工于文字,明于义意,畅于表达,不为功。况吾国文史,实相辅济。马迁班固以史鸣,亦文苑之雄也。今马氏以一人之力,从万卷书中,译数百年间事。虽优为之,然不免小疵。势也,人情宜然也。余嘉锡、徐震堮书均晚出,马氏未及见,亦滋可憾。
马氏书出,声誉鹊起。华盛顿大学(University of Washington, Seattle)之David R. Knechtges,闻风起效,拟译《文选》全书六十卷(Wen xuan, or Selections of Refined Literature, Princeton University Press, 已出两册,分别为1982及1987)则马氏开山之功为何如?台湾书肆,得其书,竞相翻版,俄顷两家(敦煌书局,1978;南天书局1978),其纸贵都邑,传播士林又若是。一良、伊同,燕京哈佛同学,又同癖南北朝事。伊同自卒业哈佛,久留北美,甚少他动,一良颇异是。既离哈佛教职,返国任教,屡访欧亚非各国,出席国际学术会议。1982年,受聘加州大学,寓柏克莱(Berkeley, CA),得马氏书而善之。东访哈佛,道出匹资堡(Pittsburgh, PA),晤伊同。契旧邓嗣禹,亦自印地安那大学(University of Indiana)来会。嗣禹,出燕京哈佛,留意北朝史,尝译《颜氏家训》(Family Instructions for the Yen Clan, Yen-shih chia-hsun, Leiden, 1968),以富赡典雅负盛名。谈次论学,咸谓临川书,自马译行,益见重于海外。吾辈宜尽愚陋,竭见闻,使原文晦涩者白于世。事未即行。1989年一良再访美,假国会图书馆(The Library of Congress)与彼邦主司,研商吾国善本编订国际总目事。会罢,游匹城,借伊同所藏中英《世说》。既返纽约,逐款厘订,各就所见,函电咨商,庶几乎无憾;历数月而稿初定。凡与马氏异趣者,择其尤,若札记体,笔而出之,得四百余事,公诸世。初非有心立异也。瑕疵所举,铅黄所施,锱铢毫芒耳,余则醇且粹,莹琰自若也。所翼翼自期者,踵事增华,度长絜大,在马氏为功臣,在读者为益友,若是焉已耳。至《世说》原文,有未能遽解,而马译又未尽安者:如“可将当轴了其此处”(Ⅵ/36),如“风领毛骨”(Ⅷ/88),如“省率治除”(Ⅷ/89),如“鉴方臣如有功夫”(Ⅸ/14),如“大修计校”(Ⅸ/24),如“钞撮清悟”(Ⅸ/82),如“扬州吏民寻义逐之”(ⅩⅩⅧ/3),凡七条。冠诸首,以憿高明。1990年2月,东至周一良,江阴王伊同。
凡 例
(1)《世说》凡三十六门,门各系若干条,多寡不定。〈赏誉〉最多,凡一百五十七条;〈自新〉最少,二条而已。今部门用罗马字,属条则用阿拉伯字。如ⅩⅣ/7,即〈容止〉第十四第七条。
(2)中英文文法不尽同,译述时或需增损。原文有而译文从略者,用圆括弧(),译文有而原文无者,用方括弧〔〕以明之。译文有说明处亦用圆括弧(如i. e., …之类)。
(3)刘孝标所引书,皆写明出处,如《管辂别传》、《晋中兴书》之类。正文则免。
(4)每条大抵分为三行。首马译,次《世说》原文或刘注,末行则为修正稿。其中关键紧要字句,英文用斜体字(italics),中文则加底线。
(5)马氏有漏译或衍译者,悉逐条注明。
